Student Behaviour

on School Visits with a Residential Element

School visits with a residential component are a valuable part of the curriculum and sporting life. They offer opportunities for experiences and learning not normally available in the classroom.

At BISB, we have a tradition of enriching the curriculum by such visits; it will be helpful to parents and students to observe the following guidelines:

1.        Visits are intended to be stimulating and enjoyable. They are not family holidays. Activities planned and organised by staff during the visit are not negotiable.

2.        The organisation of a visit is an activity undertaken voluntarily by teachers. Students should therefore at all times demonstrate respect, cooperation and the highest standards of courtesy.

3.        When abroad, our students are ambassadors of our school and their home country. Students should bear this in mind at all times and behave accordingly.

4.        Students will be expected to accept and adhere to the local rules, which exist in the hotel concerning safety, hygiene, cleanliness in bedrooms, lights out, quiet times etc.

5.        As a school, we have very clear expectations about standards of behaviour. In particular, as in school, smoking and the consumption of alcohol or other drugs are not acceptable on school visits.

6.        In the event of a severe breach of accepted standards of behaviour, a teacher in charge will have the right to send a student home, if it is felt that this is the only way to protect the well-being of others.  In the unlikely event of this course of action being necessary we would expect to recoup unavoidable additional expenses from parents.

In conclusion, it is important to remember that on our residential visit, teachers act in loco parentis on behalf of parents. Therefore, teachers are responsible for all decisions regarding conduct, discipline and the programme of events even if parents are present. School groups are different from families and to ensure the safety and well-being of all involved, a willingness to co-operate and accept these guidelines is essential.
